The first race started with the shot of a gun at 11:00 as 100 girls swarmed off the starting line beginning their 5k (3.1 miles) run. Deerfield junior, Ashley Jacobs was the first to cross the finish line for the team with a time of 20:43 placing 24 overall for the girls race. Not even 30 seconds later our next 2 runners Cambridge’s Olivia Williams and Erin Rieckmann completed their run, placing 30th and 32th respectively. Once our final 4 teammates finished their races, our team score was 205 points putting us in 7th place out of 14 teams.
Approximately 45 minutes from the first gun shot a second could be heard, initiating a stampede of 108 boys. In a tightly ran race (less than 45 seconds separated the top 5 runners), Cambridge senior Spencer Currie placed 6th roughly 23 seconds behind first place. Our team’s next runners, Will Kaashagen and Jack Nikolay, placed in the top third and, with a combined score of 157 points the team placed 8th out of 16 teams.
When the final results came in, the Jefferson boys team and Lake Mills girls team took the top spots qualifying them, as well as the second place teams East Troy and Jefferson (boys and girls respectively), for the State meet Saturday, October 28, at Wisconsin Rapids. Additionally, Spencer, with a season personal record time of 16:42, was among the 5 male individual State qualifiers. |
